Professional Development and IT Training

Background

Our client, a state government department, places a strong focus on the skills and abilities of their staff and engaged Odyssey in mid-2009 to develop and deliver a number of Personal Development and Computer training courses to their staff.
These courses included topics in Leadership and Management, Sales and Customer Service, Project Management, Communication, Personal Development and HR Management, as well as courses covering Adobe Publishing and Web and the suite of Microsoft Office products.

What we did

To equip staff with the skills necessary to ensure the accountability of the 600 public sector entities which make up their client base , we have delivered 63 training sessions to date across the full scope of courses requested by our client including:

  • 37 closed-group sessions, all held in-house at the client’s venue
  • Attendance by staff to various public scheduled courses, held at Odyssey Training’s venue
  • Evaluation of training program using Kirkpatrick model
  • Unlimited post-course telephone support offered to all participants

The training courses were designed to compliment each other, and to provide staff with a skill set which is both valuable and applicable to their everyday work lives. Customised Microsoft Word Training

Background

Our client had been using Office 2007 since June/July 2010. In a survey of staff conducted about Word 2007 it was identified that training was required for staff needing to use MS Word to an advanced level.  With staff located in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, they wanted to ensure consistency of delivery as well as customisation to suit their needs.  This included delivering the courses via a 2 hour format to minimise the disruption to their business operations.

What we did

It was determined that the sessions would be two hours in length and Odyssey TrainingTM worked with the department to develop the course outlines for these courses. Odyssey also developed customised handouts for staff to take away with them after the session. There was a total of 12 x 2 hour sessions developed and delivered by Odyssey nationally. These included:

  • Styles and building blocks
  • Formatting
  • Headers and footers – section breaks
  • Hyperlinks and cross references
  • Citations, bibliography, footnotes and end notes.
  • Table of contents and indexes
  • Track changes
  • Tables
  • Macros
  • Mail merge
  • Charts and graphs
  • Fields and forms

In total, there were 88 courses run nationally, with 692 participants attending the sessions.

Local Government

Creative Thinking and Problem Solving

Background

A local Council who Odyssey TrainingTM has been working with for the past four years, was undergoing a campaign to rebrand their city. They wanted to provide staff with training to meet the challenges associated with rebranding, with a focus on creative thinking and problem solving. The projected outcome of this training project was to inspire passion and enthusiasm in the workplace, make effective decisions and take action to solve problems and cope with change.  Due to the success of the program, Odyssey TrainingTM works closely with their Learning and Development team to design and deliver courses as part of their induction and ongoing training programs.

What we did

Odyssey TrainingTM developed customised courses for the council which take participants through an exploration of creative thinking techniques, learning strategies to develop new insights and fresh perspectives, while having fun.

We also have conducted other in-house training programs which include:

  • Creative Thinking
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Workgroup Facilitation
  • Improving Staff Performance
  • Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving

“Valuable information and very interesting. I learned a great deal.”
