Health Care

Professional Development Training - Workforce Management

Background

Our client is one of the largest tertiary hospitals in Queensland and provides services to patients from Queensland, Northern New South Wales, the Northern Territory and neighbouring countries in the South West Pacific.  Odyssey TrainingTM worked closely with this health care client, to develop and deliver a range of courses, to help staff develop their skills in workforce management.

The objective of the training was to give staff the vital skills required to motivate and mentor team members effectively, in order to maximise the output of the workforce and maintain job satisfaction.

What we did

The focus of the training courses was to provide participants with the skills necessary to work efficiently and effectively in situations where they are under pressure. The main skills addressed in the training were dealing with difficult people and conflict, supervision and management of people and customer service, as well as a range of courses covering the Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite of programs.
In total Odyssey delivered 171 closed group training sessions with 14 courses customised specifically them.

As part of this contract Odyssey TrainingTM was required to:

•    work closely with the Organisation Development Unit (ODU) to identify training needs
•    Developed the content for courses specific to our client’s requirements
•    Consult with ODU to adjust content and incorporate business specific case studies and scenarios
•    Deliver training in-house at client’s venue
•    Administration of the courses including all paperwork and coordination of bookings
•    Evaluation of the training program using Kirkpatrick model (Levels 1, 2 and 3)
•    Regular reporting to ODU on attendee feedback and trainer information captured during courses conducted

The project involved Odyssey TrainingTM delivering in excess of 170 training courses with nearly 3,000 staff members receiving training.

“Odyssey staff including trainers have always performed in a professional manner and made it a pleasure to work together to achieve goals of the department.  The passion Odyssey staff have for what they do is contagious and this is also evident in the training room with the trainers being highly skilled and having their own experience to draw on in some difficult situations.”
Karen, Manager of ODU

Community

Induction Program

Background

Odyssey TrainingTM was contracted to develop and deliver a training program for 200 Community Visitors and Community Visitor Supervisors and support staff.  Approximately 180 were new to the organisation, employed on a casual basis across Queensland, and are responsible for visiting children and young people in care and providing update reports.

What we did

This training included a two day presentation-style workshop to train all new staff on the relevant legislation, procedures and ensure they are aware of their responsibilities in the role.

Following this, a two day session was conducted covering topics such as Communication Skills,  Conflict Resolution and Cultural Awareness.  Attendees broke down into groups and four concurrent training sessions were run to enable a more interactive learning experience.

To deliver this project Odyssey TrainingTM was required to:

  • Develop a training project plan including tasks, deliverables, responsibilities, project risks and training recommendations
  • Ensure project timelines and deliverables were adhered to by Odyssey staff, and the client’s staff and subject matter experts
  • Review legislation as directed and incorporate this into the training programs as required
  • Provide regular update reports to stakeholders
  • Work with and provide support to subject matter experts and presenters, and co-facilitate as required, to ensure the program developed was appropriate
  • Coordinate presenters, subject matter experts and trainers in-line with the agenda developed by Odyssey Training
  • Prepare training workbooks and distribute to attendees
  • Set up facilities in conjunction with the client and hotel venue staff
  • Develop customised feedback reports to be completed by facilitators and attendees
  • Upon completion, a detailed report was presented to the client including attendee feedback, trainer observation and future recommendations

This project was completed in less than 12 weeks from the date Odyssey supplied the proposal to delivery of the Induction program with 200 staff being up-skilled in these areas.

Odyssey TrainingTM was then contracted to provide training in the new IT System. As approximately 80% of community visitors were new employees, company email accounts had not be set up and community visitors were using their own computers, it was determined that the needs analysis would be conducted over the telephone.

This enabled Odyssey to assess the technical capabilities of staff, their willingness to use a computerised reporting system, check availability to attend training and determine whether staff had the equipment required to perform their role. This information was entered into a database developed by Odyssey for the project and used to develop a training plan, schedule and courseware. In addition providing the technical project team with information regarding the access new staff had to the technology required to use the new Information System.

Senior Leadership and Strategic Thinking

Background

This association is a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation, representing 2,000 members and clients around the state. They identified that, to provide their members with the support they require, their staff needed to upskill.

What we did

Odyssey TrainingTM worked with the Association to develop and deliver courses based around Innovative Problem Solving, Senior Leadership and Strategic Thinking, Supervision and Management of People, and Project Management Fundamentals. Odyssey Training customised standard training programs to suit the workplace environment of the Association and delivered training onsite to all participants.

These courses assisted staff in developing original ideas with true strategic value using an innovative mindset. Participants were also coached in leadership skills and strategies, allowing them to understand the difference between a manager and a leader and teaching them how to identify in which circumstances to use different types of influencing skills.
